My Lefthanded, Backwards, Upsidedown Life & Assorted Short Stories

As a young man, John Gardiner scrawled his thoughts on his bedroom windowsill. Now in Memories for Sale, Gardiner shares short stories, poems, and a novella that he hopes will provide inspiration for others to look inward and reflect on the world around them.

Gardiner, a former newspaper editor, believes that we are all intelligent enough to solve our own problems. With that theory in mind, he offers writings that attempt to unravel the meaning of life and encourage deep thinking. In his varied collection shared with fluid realism, Gardiner explores relatable topics such as the aging process, loneliness, and suffering and pain as well as chronicles the life of a character named “Gawd” by his abusive alcoholic father. Through his emotional thoughtscapes, Gardiner offers a creative foundation for others to contemplate the future of humanity and their own destinies.

Memories for Sale: Tales from a Small Town shares a collection of short stories, poems, and a novella that explores the human condition.

Brian Hay

Freelance Journalist, Sarnia, ON

John Gardiner’s prose is concise and to the point. Redundancies, run-on sentences and embellishments that would bog narratives down have been assiduously avoided. That spareness creates a directness that stimulates listeners to explore the layers surrounding the text whether they be listening or reading. His subjects resonate with the lives of anyone who’s ever been caught in a snow storm, enjoyed a hockey game, revelled in the pleasure of sitting down with a good book or simply thought about what transpired over a single day. Respect for the mastery authors such as Hemingway, Wolfe, Steinbeck and other literary giants had for presenting thoughts with impeccable clarity has an obvious influence over his style and it’s a facet that’s entirely welcome.

Michele Law

Producer, Kingsville Folk Music Festival

Three years ago the Kingsville Folk Music Festival began including area authors in the performer lineup with excellent audience feedback. The 2019 Festival writer in residence was John Gardiner from Wallaceburg, Ontario, reading from his book Memories for Sale. Johns stories are spoken songs that not just touch but wrench the heart. He shows us just how fragile our relationships and lives are and how easily our paths can be changed forever. John was an incredible addition to our 2019 festival lineup and Memories for Sale is a must-read.
